Discussion Groups
Second Forum, January 19, 2006
In order to facilitate input from all participants at the DFA Forum,
small discussion groups were formed for a portion of the meeting.
Each discussion group focused on one of the four topics listed below.
| Access/Usage Discussion Group |
| Metadata/taxonomy issues; change controls; retrieval processes/searching;
legal issues, including privacy; application; security; preserving authenticity; reliability
and integrity of data/electronic records; risk assessment; data-mining and knowledge-bases. |
| Selection Discussion Group |
| Determining what to keep; document/file lifecycle, including media and technology implications
at different stages of the lifecycle; time-span of various stages; time frames for
preservation; regulatory-driven preservation; preserving research; linkages to records
management (such as electronic records audit; back-ups; business continuity; options for
ensuring access and availability; legal discovery and litigation holds; monitoring and audit trails). |
| Technical Issues Discussion Group |
| Recommended technology standards and best practices;
ensuring file/information is retrievable and intact for the long-term; changing rate of
technology; introduction and adoption of new technologies; discussions of current
technology audit; migration, conversion and emulation strategies; documentation;
permanence issues. |
| Education & Outreach Discussion Group |
| Building awareness around electronic preservations issues;
what should the DFA value proposition components be; how to
build alliances with other organizations/efforts/initiatives; thinking
internationally (geography), across industries (integration with business/private sector),
cross-functionally (relevancy/detailed); how do we ensure broad adoption of standards
and policies; pursue the concept of a central clearinghouse for information. |
